Module 1: Engaged Learning

I am on overload. I consider myself an idea man. The thoughts of others act as catalysts for my mind to generate new ideas or polish old ones. There is information overload due to the amount of posts associated with the e-learning course. I have to limit what I read.

One post, though, stating online education is needed for those who are being bullied in our schools cannot be ignored. Why or how did schools evolve into such unsafe places? WHAT HAPPENED?!?

Resource of the Week: Diigo is an online bookmarking tool.

Module 2: Building Learning Communities

As we considered the rules for the class (a.k.a. netiquette), I found myself reducing all of the discussions back to 'respect'. Respect is a comprehensive and well-understood rule. The rule is easy to remember and easy to use.

Resource of the Week: Moodle is a free web-based course management system that educators can use to create effective learning sites.

Module 3: Activities to Engage Online Learners

Forums. We each developed our own forum within Moodle. The idea being to generate discussion and the free flow of resources. I found there to be too much information. This continues to be a theme. I don't require 200-300 ideas, tools or resources to find new ways to improve my classroom. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.

Resource of the Week: iGoogle is Web 2.0 tool which allows the user to create a custom homepage. Google provides numerous gadgets which allow you to view email, follow headlines, check weather and much more. You can even create your own gadget. Update: iGoogle will not be available after 1 November 2013.

Module 4: Assessment: Measuring Online Learning

I found Moodle difficult to use while creating my quiz. I was impressed by several of the quizzes produced by classmates, especially the video based quiz.

Resources of the Week: Creative Commons supports and encourages digitial creativity, sharing, and innovation. Fair Use deals with use of copyrighted information. With regards to online assessment, the practical guides on the CSHE website are comprehensive.

Module 5: Activities Knowledge Seeker

Research Topic: Online Instructional Design with LON-CAPA

Currently 50% of the graded work in my Geometry course is online. I use the LON-CAPA environment to generate problem sets, manage a blog, and facilitate online peer tutoring.

The online assignments combine a cyclic review with new learning. Students are assigned 25 problems and normally have two to three weeks to complete the work. The online problems are in addition to the routine homework given in each class. I have access to a problem bank as well as have the facility to write my own problems.

Resource of the Week: Kathy Schrock's Guide for Everything should be your first stop when looking for resources to evaluate online content.

Module 6: Power Searcher: Theory Into Practice

I enjoyed playing detective with an online resource. The analogy is saying a person is a good teacher without ever seeing them teach. A website is not a good website unless it is still good when seen up close.

Resource of the Week: Google custom search allows you to create a personal search engine.

Module 7: Your E-Portfolio

A week ago I had a blog. Now I have purchased a domain and have a website. What I thought would be a simple one page portfolio with a few links has become so much more. I found it beneficial to create my pages in Mircosoft word and test navigation prior to putting the information into Google Sites.

Resource of the Week: Google wins again with Google Sites.

Module 8: Creating Your Online Learning Environment
